Experts prepare map of little-known Mayan region in Mexico

Specialists are developing a map of archaeological sites in a little-known Mayan region in Mexico's Campeche state, where an ancient city now known as Chactun was discovered this year, the National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, said.

The region was one of the least explored in the Mayan zone as recently as 15 years ago, project leader Ivan Sprajc and specialist Nikolai Grube said.

The INAH has provided support for the project since it started in 1996.

The project has helped expand knowledge of this region of southeast Mexico.

Even though the area is located in the heartland of the ancient Mayan civilization, knowledge of the central lowlands "was much poorer than that of neighboring regions, such as Guatemala's Peten and northwestern Belize," Sprajc and Grube said in a statement.
